Hazel Shelton, the wife of J.B. Shelton, was a local
historian. She was diligent about recording historical events and
sharing them with me. She came to visit often sharing her most recent
findings and I too, would share with her.
When I first bought the old Tobin house that was
originally located on Main Street, Hazel kept pushing me along wanting
me to expedite the restoration so she could make a colored painting of
the old home.
One of Hazels many talents was that she was an artist
and was always painting events, buildings, and people.
Today, I am going to share with you some of the
recordings that Hazel found and copied to share with me. She gathered
her information from interviews with old timers or from old Aubrey
News papers.
I begin with the following:
January 01, 1888 J.M. Bruce Dry Goods, Joe Powledge
bought the grocery department of Rowley and Graddick. There was a
social hop at the Parker and Billingsly Hall.
December 31, 1887 Joe Powledge came near getting his
eye put out while fighting with Roman Candles. Several others received
severe burns. J.M. Bruce received a severe burn.
March 10, 1888 Saturday The Aubrey school is
almost finished and only lacking the painting.
March 31, 1888 Saturday Jesse E Fain Dry Goods
Store (called the Aubrey Dry Goods), Mr. McDonald bought a lot for L.N.
Edwards to erect a saloon.
June 9, 1888 Saturday County Court is examining
evidence of Mrs. Clardy for shooting Mr. Spears at Aubrey Thursday.
