The photo I would like to share this week is of the old Meat Market that was located straight across Main Street from today’s hardware store. The men standing on the front porch Wood Goin’s Meat Market were all friends. I am sure this was the usual everyday scene on this old plank (board) sidewalk. The sidewalk was a comfortable place for the men to congregate and take care of the early morning business.

My grandfather, Wood Goin, sold freshly baked light bread every day, along with other freshly baked goods.

The tall man on the far left side of the group was William I Harmon. He was the father of Lush Harmon. He died in 1930. I don’t remember him, but I do remember his wife Aunt Nettie. Aunt Nettie stands out in my mind because she was always so glad to see kinfolks. I always looked forward to a hug and kiss from her. That was truly a loving family with great memories of my youth.

Great stories were always in store when they came to visit. The laughing and story telling would last until 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning – all night long.

This is an extremely large family. Many of the family members are still living in the Aubrey and Denton area.

I have recently been in contact with Trigg Lawson who lives in New Mexico. He is a descendant of William I Harmon. It was with great pleasure when I heard from here a week or so ago. He has been sharing his ancestry with me and plans to share many family stories with me in the future.

The following is from an email I received from Trigg Lawson this past week:

Dear Cousin:

Bouncer, I promised to get back to you with some more information about my part of the Harmon descendants. William I Harmon was my great grandfather.

My records which were passed to me by my mother and copied from an old family Bible indicate his middle name was Israel. Also according to our records, Will’s wife was Mary Jeanette Daugherty.

They had six children:

1. Tennessee Iowa "Ola" Harmon born April 9, 1892 (married William Thomas "Tom" West), died October 19, 1976 and buried at Belew. Tennessee and Tom had four children.

2. Mary Ann "Mae" Harmon born August 28, 1895 (married Wes Morris) lived in Wichita Falls.

3. Laura Jane "Jennie" Harmon born August 3, 1897 (married Lantrip).

4. Lillie Alma Harmon born February 3, 1900 (married Pritchett).

5. Maude Harmon born September 19, 1902 (married Lewis).

6. Lucius "Lush" Dewitt Harmon born December 31, 1905, buried at Belew.

The four children of Ola and Tom West are as follows:

1. William Earl West who married Hazel. They had three children all born in Denton and Cooke County – Annabelle, Delbert, Bennie, Bobbie.

2. Ola Mae West married Lee Scott who was Austin Scott’s brother. She was born in Denton County and buried at Belew. They had six children who were all born in Denton County – Lee Ola Scott, Tommy Lee Scott, May Lou Scott, William Lee "Bill" Scott, Bonnie Jeanette Scott, Markaleta Kay Scott.

3. Laura "Kathleen" West was born July1, 1915 at Rock Hill Community and died July 28, 1992 and buried at Belew, married Cecil Lawson. They had four children who were born in Clovis, New Mexico. They are Trigg Lawson, Michale Gene Lawson, Teresa Ann, and Mary Lee.

4. Bonnie Lee West married Don L. Nix She was born in Denton County and buried at Fritch, Texas. They had three children – Fraya Pauline Nix, Mitchell Don Nix, and Richie Lee Nix.

That’s all I have time for now, will get back to you soon.

Kindest Regards to You,

Trigg Lawson

Many thanks to Trigg Lawon for sharing this information with me. I look forward to more information and family stories from Trigg.

If any of you readers would like to share your family information with us I would be very happy to share with everyone. I am sure they too will show the same inherited Cherokee family loyalty.
