The Peanut Festival, seems to be a time when local
folks lay away the bad news that occupy our living room when we sit
down to relax. The hurricanes, the acts of violence from all parts of
the globe are not thought of for a short time while we think of the
many acts of joy and lifelong recollections when we see old friends.
While the violence occurs and clutters our minds, we
still have room to relax in our environment of Aubrey and during this
season of harvest give thanks for the celebration of our harvest
though they may be small or large.
The kidney failure that I have experienced has most
certainly altered my lifestyle and created an environment of violence
within my own body. I have learned to accept and adjust with the
expert medical and professional people that have given me added life.
I owe each one of them thanks and gratitude.
The activities of our local festival this past weekend
brought many relatives and friends together to hug, talk and visit.
The many different events in the weekend make it difficult to
determine what parts of the celebration were best.
I started out watching the busy workers coming alive
Friday afternoon, and then by Saturday morning, the buzzing activities
surrounded us in the downtown area. The many boots were set up,
occupied and ready to operate.
The local Cherokees of the Cherokee Nation of Texas
built an Onega Village that contained much historical information and
activities. There was a booth with a video explaining the Cherokee
history. They also sold Indian t-shirts and other attractive Cherokee
items.
The Peanut Festival was a huge success this year. I
found when I went to church on Sunday, that Pastor Lyle Benson
announced that our church’s booth was very successful.
I heard some of the older people comment, "Gosh, there
are so many people here for this, that I don’t know anyone." I had to
make the comment, "if you walk up to almost anyone, and inquire about
their ancestry, you would find out that many of the folks we don’t
know are our relatives."
I especially enjoyed visiting with Leon and Modelle
Melton as well as J.D. Reeves and his little Indian wife. We talked
about things and events that had happened in Aubrey.
J.D.’s wife shared many old photos with me that they
have accumulated throughout the years. He is planning on coming back
to share with me the stories behind the old photos. I will then be
able to share these excellent old photos with everyone.
I also enjoyed a visit with Howard Kelly and his
cousin, Beverly Caddell. They made a surprise visit.. These are just
an example of the many old family and friends that made their way back
to the annual event.
Beverly is one of my favorite email buddies. She is
working on the Caddell family history.
