Elm Ridge School 1915

The Elm Ridge School was a rural school district that was located east of Sandtown in the Little Elm Creek watershed. It was an operable school taking the rural students from grade one through grade eleven.

While I was visiting with J.H. Byrom this past week, he showed me the photo that is featured this week. He has identified the students as they appeared in 1915. The High School group is identified as follows: (top row, left to right), Leo Hutson, Earnest Hutson, Marrice Testment Reynolds, Cecil Warren, Charlie Currey, Cecil Button, and Jodie Curry.

Students in the second row are unknown first name Cunningham, Arelia Byrom, Lena Byrom, Bill Hutson, Iva Wilson, Mr. Bruce (teacher), Dollie Byrom, Tommie Cole, Rubie Button.

Students in the third row are Mittie Taylor, May Reynolds, Odesia Byrom, Buela Byrom, Ivy Button, Callie Wilson, unknown first name Isom, and Viola Curry.

Fourth row, Clarence Reynolds, Perman Hutson, Burlan Byrom, Charlie Wilson, Cole, Testment, and Hutson.

I received a wonderful compliment about The Town Charter that I would like to pass on to Editor, Tim Leslie. I received a letter from Mrs. Carl W. Duncan from Aspermont, Texas, she is Coach Duncan’s grandmother. She said that she carefully reads The Town Charter in its entirety each week and made gracious comments about the editor and the stories that I share in this column.

May I take this space to express my appreciation to Mrs. Duncan for her nice letter. I was so impressed with her beautiful penmanship and look forward to more letters from her. My prayers are with you Mrs. Duncan as you help your ninety-one-year-old brother who is in the hospital.

In a recent illness that I experienced, I was told by Chief, D.L. Hicks that he and others smoked the pipe in prayer for my recovery. I am most appreciative of this prayer of the Native American people and the custom of our people.
