I have been pondering about what I should tell you
historically this week as I continue to write about interesting
incidents that have happened many years ago in our community.
Several readers have come in expressing their
appreciation of the column and their wishes for me to continue.
I am happy to inform you that the compliments are many
and in return I shall do my best to dig up old information (of which
some is good and some bad).
But thank you all for a splendid year of 2001 and best
wishes go to you for the next year.
I made a request for old photos about the 1934 Aubrey
edition of the school paper, and have been honored and trusted with a
photo of the graduation class of 1934.
So this week I am going to reprint an article entitled
LEAGUE CANDIDATES PREPARE FOR DENTON COUNTY MEET, which is
taken from the Aubrey School newspaper Hi Spots which was
printed in February 1934.
It is with great pleasure that I have talked with Alta
Rice who is mentioned in this paper. She explained to the that she has
a photo of the graduation class of 1934, and she has graciously
allowed me to share this photo with you. I have agreed to get her an
8x10 enlargement of the photo in exchange for allowing me to use this
photo. The people in the photo from left to right are Alta Rice,
Florine Coffey, Carol Peterman, Edith Pearl Simpson, and sponsor
Roberta Grogan.
The article from the Hi Spots is as follows:

Miss Grogan has her teams practicing daily and plans
to win all honors.
Under the coaching of Grace Sims, Mary Powledge and
Carol Peterman are to represent the school in debate. These girls won
second place last year, and Miss Sims seems confident of their victory
this year.
Dallas Webb and Otis Lipstreu will represent the boys’
division. Aubrey placed second last year in this event too.
Possible entries for the picture memory are Joyce
Powledge, Joy Holmes, Billy Lipstreu, Gwendolyn Wilson, Charles

Those going out for declamation have chosen their
parts and are working on them. Those entering are Reta Smotherman,
senior; Mildred Hodges, high school junior; and Shirley, Aleen, and

Peterman is entering. She won the district honors last year.

Jack Bryson has been helping the baseball girls work
out. Their team has not been chosen yet.
Superintendent O’Hair is coaching tennis, Mary
Phillips, Mildred Hodges, Carol Peterman, Edith Perle Simpson, Dallas
Webb, Byron Holmes, and Otis Lipstreu are working out for entries.
The volley ball girls have organized their team and

Again may I give everyone my best wishes for the
new year and thank you Alta Rice for helping to make this my last
write up this year.
Alta told me that the people in the photo gained an
affiliated recommendation for participating in the Interscholastic
League, which meant they were automatically qualified to enter any
college of their choosing.
